BARRACK St from Patrick to Elizabeth Streets : Text Follows:

The following street signs represent the story of the Young Irelanders in Van Diemen's Land—1856 From Patrick St. corner Barrack St.

William Smith O'Brien, Patrick O'Donoghoe, Thomas Francis Meagher, John Mitchel, Pat Smyth (who assisted Mitchel, Meagher and Macmanus to escape) John Martin, Kevin Todd O'Doherty andTerrence Bellew Macmanus.

These men were political agitators for the poor of Ireland at the time of the great "Potato Famine". They were all exiled to Van Diemen's Land in 1848. JOHN MITCHEL and JOHN MARTIN were assigned to Bothwell and when Mitchel's family arrived, Martin moved with them to Nant Cottage (which still stands). FRANCIS MEAGHER moved to Campbell Town for only a few days before moving to Ross and finally to Lake Sorell (East of Bothwell). The other four Irish exiles were WILLIAM SMITH O'BRIEN (to Maria Island, Port Arthur and lastly to New Norfolk), KEVIN TODD O'DOHERTY (known as "Saint Kevin", moved to Elm Cottage at Oatlands), TERENCE BELLEW MACMANUS (to New Norfolk) and PATRICK O'DONOGHUE (to Hobart).

On their arrival at the port of Hobart, the Assistant Comptroller of Convicts, William E. Nairn, came aboard their vessels and presented the prisoners with the conditions of their special paroles or "tickets-of-leave". "They were to be allotted separate districts, where they could lodge and within which they could have freedom of movement, but from which they were not to roam. They were to report their residence to the police magistrate, and from then on present themselves to the magistrate once a month. They were not to be absent from their residence after nine o'clock at night, nor have any contact with each other".

All accepted a "ticket-of-leave" except O'Brien. However, after a failed escape attempt, he finally succumbed to a promise to Governor Denison not to attempt to escape from this colony during the ensuing six months, namely 9th. November, 1850, to 9th. May, 1851.
